Figure on the Ridge
The only work without a circular form, this composition builds a landscape from black and grey brushwork: an arching mass like a wave or the mouth of a cave, a tall spire at the right, a low scree of horizontal strokes, and a slimmer standing shape at the left. At the centre of the open arc a tiny seated figure rests on the rim, easy to miss and hard to forget once seen. The broad strokes show the full width of the loaded brush. Against so much weight, the small figure suggests contemplation, scale and solitude.
