The Inner Eye
The Copper Mask
Inside the black disc and its ridged swirl, a circle of warm copper or peach paint holds a turbulent cluster of black, white and silver strokes. It can be read as a face, a skull, a bird's head, or simply as turbulence. Nothing resolves cleanly, which gives it the unease of something half-recognised. The surrounding rings flow toward it, so it functions less as decoration than as a centre of gravity. Of the circular works, this is among the most psychological: a mask that might be hiding a face, or revealing one.
